Fact Sheet: New CEC comes to YSR's rescue!

It is a great relief for Chief Minister Dr Y S Rajasekhara Reddy on the last day of election campaign. The Election Commission has given him clean chit with regard to his speech at Nandyal last week, in which he made certain comments against Telangana.

The Election Commission authorities in New Delhi, who went through the CDs of YSR’s speech, felt that there were absolutely no inflammatory remarks in the speech and that he had not whipped up regional passions. All that YSR spoke was only to warn about the future of irrigation projects if Mahakootami comes to power, since one of its partners, TRS, is opposed to the projects. The EC ignored YSR’s remarks that settlers would become foreigners in Telangana.

The EC’s verdict was quite expected, as it is Naveen Chawla, a staunch loyalist of Sonia Gandhi, who is at the helm of affairs in the commission. And the message to Chawla from the Congress leadership is clear: don’t embarrass YSR at the time of elections!
